A nationwide crackdown on county lines operations led by the British Transport Police (BTP) has resulted in 65 arrests and the seizure of £80,000 in cash during a significant operation targeting drug supply networks spanning across England, Scotland, and Wales. The operation involved 49 separate actions across the UK, with 38 operations carried out in collaboration with local police forces. Officers were deployed at stations and on train services, executing search warrants at various locations, resulting in 88 drug seizures, confiscation of 42 weapons from the railway, and the recovery of 74 mobile phones linked to drug supply.
In addition to the arrests and cash seizures, 21 individuals received care and support interventions, ensuring their safety and removing them from the risks associated with county lines activities. The collaborative effort between the BTP, Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), and other agencies also led to three charges under the Modern Slavery Act, highlighting the commitment to protecting children and vulnerable adults from exploitation by criminals.
Detective Superintendent Craig Payne emphasised the detrimental impact county lines criminals have on communities and the railway network, citing the violence often associated with drug dealing. The successful operations have disrupted the activities of these gangs, contributing to a safer environment for both the public and railway users. The BTP encourages the public to report any signs of child exploitation or concerns discreetly by texting 61016, calling BTP on 0800 40 50 40, contacting emergency services by dialling 999, or providing information anonymously to Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
