Conservative Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) from Lanarkshire have voiced their concerns over the extensive wait times for temporary accommodation in the region. In a series of Freedom of Information requests, it was revealed that both children and adults in Lanarkshire are facing prolonged stays in temporary housing. Central Scotland list MSPs Meghan Gallacher and Graham Simpson of the Conservative party have criticised the Scottish Government, calling the situation “disgraceful” and a “source of shame” for ministers.
Specifically, in North Lanarkshire, a child had to endure a staggering 613 days in temporary accommodation, while an adult faced a prolonged stay of 1,505 days without a permanent home. Meghan Gallacher expressed her dismay, stating, “These waits are absolutely disgraceful and should be a source of shame for SNP ministers.” She highlighted the unsuitability of the conditions that many children and families are forced to live in.
Neighbouring South Lanarkshire also faced similar challenges, with a child spending 420 days in temporary accommodation and an adult enduring a 767 day stay without a permanent home. Graham Simpson emphasised that the responsibility lies with the SNP, criticizing their lack of action in addressing housing shortages across Scotland and calling for new plans to prevent individuals in South Lanarkshire from being stuck in temporary accommodation.
The Scottish Government declared a national housing emergency earlier this year, with several councils also following suit. Housing minister Paul McLennan defended the government’s record of delivering over 133,000 affordable homes since 2007, including more than 94,000 for social rent. He detailed investments to increase the availability of affordable homes and support homelessness prevention measures, rapid rehousing transition plans, and assistance for local authorities facing significant temporary accommodation pressures.
