A former police officer, Martin McNally, has been found guilty of subjecting a younger colleague to a campaign of abuse after their secret affair came to light. PC McNally, aged 43, engaged in a romance with the 26-year-old officer while they worked together, exchanging a staggering 110,000 messages over 23 months without their colleagues knowing. However, McNally’s behaviour turned violent and controlling as he regularly lashed out at the woman, leaving her in fear.
During one horrific incident, while they were in a police car together, a heated argument led McNally to snatch the woman’s mobile phone from her, and he even strangled her on multiple occasions and caused damage to her property. The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, recorded one incident where she was heard pleading with McNally to leave her home after being accused of infidelity and subjected to derogatory language.
Despite denying any wrongdoing, McNally was found guilty by a jury at Hamilton Sheriff Court of engaging in abusive behaviour and making sexual remarks towards the woman between March 2020 and February 2022, as well as physically assaulting her between July and December 2021 in locations across Lanarkshire and Glasgow.
During the trial, disturbing evidence was presented, including photos of bruising on the woman’s neck from being strangled by McNally. In a recording played in court, she can be heard sobbing and begging him to leave after he pinned her down and strangled her. McNally admitted to some of the actions, such as taking the woman’s phone and damaging her door, but he denied the allegation of strangulation, claiming he was trying to de-escalate the situation.
While McNally awaits sentencing next month, Sheriff John Hamilton cautioned that the seriousness of the charges could result in a custodial sentence. Police Scotland has been approached for comment on the case.
