Johnstone Thug Arrested Six Hours After Being Released from Jail After Blood Attack
A Johnstone man has been arrested just six hours after being released from custody for an incident that left the inside of a police van covered in blood. David McGibbon, 38, severely injured his hand while opening a tin of paint, leaving a trail of blood that led police to him. The encounter with police on Johnstone’s High Street on May 15 escalated quickly as McGibbon greeted officers with racial remarks and proceeded to splatter his blood onto them by swinging and clapping his hands.
At Paisley Sheriff Court, Procurator fiscal depute Karen Yuill detailed the events, explaining that police found McGibbon in a flat with a wound on his hand. Despite being instructed to stop, McGibbon continued to splatter blood, contaminating the officers’ uniforms. Even while being escorted to the police van, he worsened his hand wound and painted himself and the inside of the cell with his blood. In the midst of the chaos, McGibbon made derogatory remarks and resisted any attempts to prevent self-harm.
McGibbon’s behaviour continued at the hospital, where he refused medical treatment and made offensive comments towards the officers. As a result, one officer sustained a minor injury and had to receive medical attention due to contamination by McGibbon’s blood. His defence agent expressed remorse on behalf of McGibbon, attributing the incident to a DIY mishap. Despite claiming police heavy-handedness, McGibbon was sentenced to 12 months in jail and a supervised release order by Sheriff Mungo Bovey KC.
