Mum slams ‘rip off’ winter wonderland experience at luxury Scots hotel

A mother has expressed disappointment and frustration at a luxury hotel’s winter wonderland experience, deeming it a “complete rip off” after paying £50 for what she described as essentially “watching a YouTube video projected on a wall.” Danica Archibald, along with her family, visited Crieff Hydro near Perth for the festive train experience on November 30. Expecting an interactive ride through a glittering winter wonderland with Christmas-themed elements, the reality fell short of their expectations.

The 23-year-old mother, accompanied by her mum, sister, and one-year-old daughter, Florence, was dismayed to find that the “interactive” aspect of the event involved a brief video of winter animals being projected onto a screen. The touted enchanting experience turned out to comprise four stalls, an ice rink with separate charges, and a garden light path featuring minimal decorations like a snowflake projector and some fairy lights. Describing the event as a money-making scheme, Danica expressed her disappointment with the lacklustre offerings that lasted less than 45 minutes.

Despite paying £50 for tickets, the family felt let down by the brevity and quality of the experience. The supposed highlight, an interactive train ride promising a keepsake bell and a hot chocolate, turned out to be a two-minute video projection and a brief garden path with fairy lights, devoid of the promised winter wonderland elements like animatronics or Santa sightings. The lack of engagement left Danica’s daughter bored, and the family felt shortchanged by the underwhelming event.

Online complaints echoed Danica’s sentiments, with some users criticising the event’s brevity and high cost relative to the experience provided. While a spokesperson for Crieff Hydro Hotel highlighted positive feedback from the majority of Winter Wonderland visitors, acknowledging and aiming to address the discontent expressed by a few attendees.
