Two children have tragically died after a frozen lake tragedy in New York. The incident took place in Albany, New York when a 12-year-old boy fell through the ice into a frozen lake, with an 11-year-old girl bravely attempting to save him. Emergency services were alerted around 4.35pm local time and rushed to the scene at Washington Park Lake.
Upon arrival, officers found the 11-year-old girl who had also fallen through the ice in an attempt to rescue the boy. She was rescued and taken to the hospital, but sadly succumbed to her injuries. A secondary search was conducted, leading to the recovery of the boy’s body around 7.25pm local time by the New York State Police underwater recovery team.
Both children were students of the Albany City School district, attending North Albany Middle School. Albany City School District Superintendent Joseph Hochreiter expressed his condolences, stating, “Our hearts go out to the families of these students at this incredibly difficult time.”
Eyewitnesses in the area reported hearing screams and witnessing the children in distress. One passerby, Max Fajardo, described how the girl attempted to be a hero, prompting him to try and assist by providing a rope.
The Albany Police Department extended their condolences to the families and friends of the young victims, acknowledging the tragic loss. The names of the children have not been disclosed due to their young ages.
