A 200-megawatt battery storage facility has been approved for Bathgate, West Lothian. The proposal, led by UK renewable energy firm OnPath Energy, sailed through West Lothian Council’s Executive Committee without objection. The plans will now move onto the Scottish Government’s Energy Consents Unit for final approval. The Pond Flexible Energy Park will cover three hectares and cater to the peak electricity needs of approximately 240,000 homes for two hours or the average demands of about 600,000 households over the same duration.
This cutting-edge facility, developed by renowned onshore renewables developer OnPath Energy, will be situated outside Bathgate. The project is a significant step towards Scotland’s 2040 net zero targets. By storing excess energy generated by wind and solar farms during low demand periods and releasing it during peak consumption times, the facility will help in grid stabilization, maximising renewable energy usage, and reducing dependency on imported fossil fuels.
Michael Newton, sustainability developer at OnPath Energy, highlighted the importance of such battery storage solutions in achieving net zero targets and enhancing energy infrastructure, emphasising the transition away from traditional energy sources like coal and gas. The development of the Pond Flexible Energy Park marks progress for OnPath Energy towards promoting social, economic, and environmental benefits from renewable energy for local communities.
Moreover, the project is expected to create around 80 jobs during the construction phase, with an estimated £1.6 million in annual wages and about £950,000 in annual business rates. These contributions will support essential local services such as schools and hospitals. Additionally, OnPath Energy plans to involve the community by working with local contractors and setting aside over £1 million for community-led investment throughout the project’s lifespan.
