HMRC Releases New Update for Taxpayers Filing Before Deadline
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has issued a new update for individuals required to file their tax returns before the deadline next month. With the deadline for Self Assessments for the 2023/24 tax year set at midnight on January 31, 2025, HMRC is urging taxpayers to take action. While many are focused on Christmas preparations, it is crucial to consider financial commitments as well.
HMRC is reminding individuals who pay tax through Self Assessment of the option to spread the cost of their tax bill. Over 15,000 customers have already arranged Time to Pay payment plans for the 2023/24 tax year, with the opportunity still available for more taxpayers to do so before the upcoming deadline. These payment plans offer flexibility for those unable to pay their tax bill in full, allowing them to manage payments through monthly instalments.
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Director General for Customer Services, emphasised the importance of helping customers manage their tax obligations. Customers can apply for online payment plans tailored to their financial situation, spreading payments over a maximum of 12 months. However, it is essential to file the Self Assessment tax return before setting up a Time to Pay arrangement.
HMRC offers various payment methods for Self Assessment tax bills, including the HMRC app and online platforms. To support taxpayers in filing their returns early and avoiding last-minute stress, HMRC provides online assistance and resources, including videos for first-time filers. It is crucial for those setting up payment plans to budget carefully to ensure timely payments and avoid penalties for missed payments.
Additionally, HMRC is reminding recipients of Simple Assessment letters that tax owed must be paid by January 31, 2025. Those who receive Simple Assessments do not need to register and complete a tax return but can settle the tax bill online or through the HMRC app. The deadline applies to both Self Assessment and Simple Assessment payments, offering the option to pay in full or in smaller increments before the deadline.
In conclusion, HMRC’s update underlines the importance of early tax return filing and spreading the cost of tax bills for those who may face difficulties in making a lump-sum payment. By providing flexible payment options and online support, HMRC aims to assist taxpayers in meeting their obligations while avoiding financial strains. Taxpayers are encouraged to utilise these resources and plan ahead to ensure a smooth tax filing process.
