Barony Gardening Club Members Delight in Talk on New Zealand Alpine Plants
Speaker Jim Jermyn recently enthralled members of the Barony Gardening Club with a captivating talk on the alpine plants of New Zealand. The illustrated presentation, titled “New Zealand’s Alpine Wonderland,” took place on December 5th. Jim, known for his expertise in alpine plants, shared his experiences from a speaking tour of the South Island of New Zealand.
Despite the cold night, a crowd of 30 members and visitors gathered to listen to Jim’s insights. He recounted his seven-week adventure in New Zealand, where he encountered a diverse range of alpine flora in perfect weather conditions. Jim highlighted the importance of good drainage for alpine plants and noted that many New Zealand alpine species would thrive in Scottish gardens.
During his talk, Jim showcased striking photographs of unique alpine plants, such as the Raoulia eximia, also known as the Vegetable Sheep, which grows exclusively on boulders resembling sheep from a distance. He also discussed rare buttercups, including the Ranunculus lyalii or Mount Cook lily, known for its large white flowers with a yellow centre.
Jim emphasised the prevalence of white flowers among the alpine plants in New Zealand, evolved to attract pollinating insects. He shared stories of encountering alpines down to the shoreline and his visits to botanical gardens in both the North and South Islands. Jim highlighted New Zealand’s dedication to preserving its unique flora through strict bio-security measures.
Despite the challenges of growing alpine plants in Scotland’s wet conditions, Jim advised on creating crevice gardens in tubs or on garden slopes. The audience engaged with questions, reflecting their enthusiasm for New Zealand’s flora. The next club meeting will feature botanical artist Sharon Bradley speaking on “Drawing on the Garden” on January 9th in Kirkmichael Hall, Parkgate.
