Drugged up Paisley man warned jail is inevitable after horror crash

A Paisley man, David Nicolson, has been warned that a prison sentence is inevitable following a horrific crash on October 17, 2022, where he had taken drugs before causing a collision. The incident took place on the M8 near Harthill, resulting in catastrophic injuries to another individual. Nicolson, 36, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court and pleaded guilty to causing serious injury to Ryan Docherty by driving dangerously with a significantly high level of ketamine in his system.

Ryan Docherty, a roofer, had pulled over to the hard shoulder of the M8 with two colleagues for a quick stop when Nicolson’s van collided with them. Mr. Docherty suffered severe injuries including a brain injury, skull fractures, facial fractures, rib fractures and spinal fractures. He underwent extensive surgery and rehabilitation following the crash.

The court heard that Nicolson, who was driving a Renault Traffic van, drifted onto the hard shoulder, hitting Mr. Docherty who was standing beside his van. Despite the severity of the crash and the injuries sustained by Mr. Docherty, Nicolson emerged unharmed. Nicolson’s lawyer mentioned that he has been receiving treatment for an underlying drug misuse issue, and his physical and mental health have worsened since the incident.

Sheriff Michael Higgins deferred Nicolson’s sentencing for background reports and imposed an interim driving ban. Despite Nicolson’s bail being continued, the sheriff highlighted the gravity of the situation, stating that a custodial sentence must be considered. Nicolson is set to return to court for sentencing next month.

In summary, David Nicolson’s reckless actions while driving under the influence of drugs led to devastating consequences for Ryan Docherty. The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence and the importance of road safety for all individuals on the road. It also underscores the significant impact that such incidents can have on the lives of those involved, both physically and emotionally.
