A man who threatened shop staff with an air gun after they refused to sell him pellets has been handed an 18-month supervision order in court. Jay Gibb, 22, was also found to be carrying a knife when police apprehended him. The incident took place at Home Essentials in Quarry Street, Hamilton on March 20. Just two days prior, Gibb had been granted bail at the same court. During his appearance at Hamilton Sheriff Court, Gibb pleaded guilty to charges of threatening or abusive behaviour and carrying a knife without reasonable excuse in a separate location in Larkhall.
Prosecutor Neil Thomson described how Gibb entered the shop seeking gun pellets, claiming he intended to harm himself. When the shop staff declined to make the sale, Gibb became agitated, swearing and waving around a BB gun. Despite their refusal, Gibb continued to intimidate the staff with the weapon before eventually leaving the premises. The incident was reported to the police, leading to Gibb’s arrest in Larkhall where officers recovered the BB gun and a knife with a four-inch blade from his possession. Gibb, who has a history of previous convictions, was represented by defence agent Gregor Jarrott who acknowledged the severity of the charges, citing his client’s struggles with mental health.
During Gibb’s time in custody following the arrest, Sheriff Liam Murphy addressed the seriousness of the situation, acknowledging the fear experienced by the shop staff due to Gibb’s actions.
