Dementia risk could be raised 79% by popular medication

A recent study conducted by the University of California-San Francisco has revealed a concerning link between a popular type of medication and an increased risk of dementia. The research indicates that regularly taking certain prescribed sleeping aids could elevate the chances of developing dementia by a staggering 79 percent. Medications such as Benzos, Ambien, and antidepressants were specifically highlighted in the study as potentially contributing to a higher risk of dementia.

The study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, involved tracking nearly 3,000 older adults over nine years who were dementia-free and living independently. The research found that the risk of dementia was more pronounced in white participants, with the frequency and type of medication playing a significant role. Interestingly, the association between sleeping pills and dementia risk was still present in black participants, despite generally lower use of these medications.

Lead author Yue Leng noted that differences in dementia risk between white and black participants could be attributed to socio-economic factors. She advised patients with sleep issues to reconsider the use of pharmaceutical aids and explore alternatives such as cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia or melatonin. Previous studies have also shown a link between poor sleep quality and a heightened risk of dementia.

To reduce the risk of dementia, the NHS recommends maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and avoiding social isolation. These findings underscore the importance of addressing sleep issues through non-pharmaceutical means to potentially lower the risk of developing dementia in later life.
