Peugeot has unveiled the latest addition to its electric vehicle (EV) line-up, the new Peugeot e-408, a fastback model set to hit the UK market next year. This introduction marks the completion of the company’s 12-vehicle EV range, showcasing Peugeot’s commitment to sustainable mobility.
Initially launched in 2022 as a plug-in hybrid, the 408 model now joins the electric revolution with a fully electric version. Built on the E-EMP3 (efficient modular platform) architecture, the 408 was always designed with electrification in mind. Sharing its platform technology with the Peugeot 308, the e-408 boasts a substantial 58.2 kWh battery positioned for optimal weight distribution between the front and rear wheels.
Despite its slightly lower range of 281 miles compared to competitors like the Tesla Model 3, the e-408 offers efficient features such as a standard heat pump for cold weather and rapid charging capabilities of up to 120kW. With the ability to charge from 20 to 80 per cent in just over 30 minutes, the e-408 provides convenience for EV drivers with 62 miles of range added in just over ten minutes.
Performance details are yet to be released, but the e-408 is equipped with an electric motor delivering 210bhp of power and 345NM of torque to the front wheels. The sleek design of the 408 remains intact in the transition to electric, with aerodynamic enhancements underneath for improved efficiency. The aesthetic incorporates Peugeot’s signature feline references, from LED headlights resembling fangs to rear lights symbolising claws.
Inside, the e-408 features Peugeot’s innovative i-Cockpit design, with a sporty steering wheel and a 10-inch digital instrument cluster. The infotainment system includes a 10-inch screen with customizable controls and wireless smartphone connectivity. The premium ‘focal’ audio system is tailored for the e-408, complemented by voice control powered by ChatGPT for entertainment and information on-the-go.
The e-408 promises a high-quality interior with heated seats, a heated steering wheel, and ample legroom, though headroom may be limited. Peugeot assures low service and maintenance costs, with service intervals every two years or 15,000 miles. Opting for services at Peugeot dealers extends the warranty on key components and the electric motor to eight years or 100,000 miles.
Pricing details for the e-408 are yet to be announced, with expectations for Allure models to start around £40,000. The new Peugeot e-408 represents the brand’s continued investment in electric mobility and the advancement towards a sustainable automotive future.
