Plans have been submitted to convert the former abattoir in Castle Douglas into assisted living flats, bringing new life to a site that has been vacant for nearly twenty years. Cygnet Health Care Ltd is behind the proposal to redevelop the site in Cotton Street, aiming to construct two blocks housing a total of 12 assisted living flats, which could create approximately 24 job opportunities in the local area.
According to documents filed with Dumfries and Galloway Council, Cygnet intends to offer specialised accommodation for individuals with diverse needs such as mental health conditions, acquired brain injuries, eating disorders, autism, and learning disabilities. The priority will be given to the local community in providing tailored support services.
The facility will consist of self-contained flats with assisted living amenities, enabling residents to enjoy a more traditional residential environment while receiving necessary care and assistance to help them transition towards greater independence. The planning statement mentions that up to 24 staff members may be present on-site at a given time, although the actual number is expected to be lower.
Not only will the development breathe new life into a previously derelict site, but it will also address a vital need within the community. The project aims to blend seamlessly with the surrounding area’s character while revitalising the unused land. The former abattoir closed down in the mid-2000s and has since been on the council’s list of vacant and derelict properties.
Earlier plans by Cunninghame Housing Association to construct homes on the site were shelved due to feasibility concerns. The new proposal by Cygnet Health Care Ltd offers a fresh opportunity to repurpose the land and cater to the community’s needs.
