Plans for a new whisky distillery in Perthshire are currently in the works, with expectations of bringing jobs and boosting the local economy. Rhiedorrach Estates, the applicants behind the proposal, are looking to change the use of Finegand Farm to accommodate a craft distillery, a visitor centre, and a maturation warehouse.
The early stages of the project saw a pre-application submitted in spring, with Rhiedorrach Estates recently receiving a scoping opinion from PKC, outlining the environmental impact information required for planning purposes. Consultant Alex Mackenzie Smith of Rhiedorrach Estates LLP highlighted the underutilisation of the current buildings at Finegand and the potential benefits a sustainable whisky distillery could bring to the local community.
The statement from Rhiedorrach Estates emphasised the goal of creating a sustainable business that provides local employment opportunities and economic benefits to the Glen community. The favourable location of the proposed distillery, adjacent to the A93, positions it strategically in the heart of the Glenshee economy. The owners of Finegand Distillery, Wayne and Heather Johnson, envision not only a first-class working distillery but also a café, visitor centre, and shop, all designed to complement the natural landscape of the area.
Despite being in the early stages, discussions are underway to attract significant investment for the project. Rhiedorrach Estates aims to keep the local community informed at every step and plans to involve them in the consultation process as the project progresses. Perth and Kinross Council commented that the planning process is still in its nascent phase, as applications are being reviewed to determine the need for an Environmental Assessment Report.
