A no-fly zone has been established over Hampden Park in preparation for the upcoming Celtic and Rangers Premier Sports Cup final clash. Scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, Police Scotland has enforced a restriction prohibiting unmanned aircraft, such as drones, from flying within one nautical mile of the national stadium between 1pm and 7pm on Sunday, December 15. This measures aim to ensure the safety and security of the event as the two rivals, Celtic and Rangers, face off for the 17th time in a League Cup final, with kick-off at 3.30pm.
The stakes are high for both teams as the victors will claim the 50th League Cup title between the two Glasgow clubs. Rangers have historically secured nine wins out of the 16 previous Old Firm finals. The League Cup has a rich history, being contested 79 times since its inception in 1946, as reported by Glasgow Live. Police Scotland’s announcement on Saturday included specifications that the drone ban extends to a height of 1,000ft.
According to a Police Scotland spokesperson, “An air restriction zone will be in place in the area surrounding Hampden Park in Glasgow between 1pm and 7pm on Sunday, 15 December. No uncrewed aircraft is permitted in the area within a one nautical mile radius of the stadium, up to a height of 1,000ft, without permission of Police Scotland during this time.” Additionally, weather conditions are expected to be challenging, with the Met Office forecasting gale force winds reaching approximately 40mph in the southside of Glasgow around kick-off.
