Why you shouldn’t drink coffee as soon as you wake up in the morning

A recent study highlights why drinking coffee first thing in the morning may not be the best choice for your body. According to a sleep expert, the rush for a caffeine fix at the crack of dawn may not actually result in the energy boost you are seeking. Caffeine works by blocking adenosine receptors in the brain that induce sleepiness, which is why consuming it later in the day can lead to sleep disturbances at night, as reported by Surrey Live. Dr. Deborah Lee, a sleep specialist working with Get Laid Beds, explains that upon waking up, cortisol levels – the stress hormone – peak. This hormone enhances alertness, focus, regulates metabolism and the immune system response.

Dr. Lee further emphasises that consuming coffee immediately after waking up, when cortisol levels are already high, could potentially lead to a reduction in the effectiveness of caffeine over time. She suggests waiting at least 45 minutes after waking up before having your first cup of coffee. The optimal time for coffee consumption is mid-to-late morning when cortisol levels are lower, and you may experience an energy slump. To ensure a good night’s sleep, it is recommended to stop consuming caffeine, including coffee, at least six hours before bedtime.

Doctor Lee stresses the importance of understanding your individual caffeine tolerance and recommends switching to herbal teas or decaf beverages if you still crave a hot drink later in the day. By being mindful of your body’s natural rhythms and avoiding caffeine intake after 3pm, you can help maintain a healthy sleep schedule and overall well-being. Remember, your body and mind will thank you for making these small adjustments.
