Police in Glasgow have been granted special powers to tackle football-related violence in the city, following shameful scenes of disorder. The authorities invoked a Section 60 order to conduct stop and searches, as they dealt with incidents of unrest before the Celtic and Rangers football match. The chaotic situation saw missiles being hurled at the police on Argyle Street and reports of property damage in Howard Street. Christmas shoppers found themselves caught in the middle of the clashes, seeking refuge in nearby shops as fans from both sides clashed on the streets, many of them concealing their identities with masks.
In response, a Superintendent of Police Scotland authorised officers to utilise powers under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act of 1994. This allowed officers to conduct necessary searches on individuals and vehicles. The order also permitted the removal of items used to conceal identities. The heightened police presence and stop and search powers were maintained in various parts of the city until late evening, with authorities emphasising the responsible use of these measures to prevent further disorder and violence.
Chief Superintendent Stevie Dolan stated that officers had to act swiftly and robustly to ensure public safety amidst the disturbances. He highlighted a zero-tolerance approach towards violence and weapons, aiming to safeguard not only the public but also the majority of football fans who seek to enjoy events safely. Despite the challenges faced, the cup final proceeded with Celtic emerging victorious after a dramatic penalty shootout.
