Scots Child Waiting for Life-Saving Transplant Gets Special Visit from Santa
A seriously ill toddler, Zachary Bradford, from Kirkintilloch near Glasgow, who is waiting for a life-saving double transplant, received a heartwarming visit from Santa ahead of Christmas. Zachary, who may have just weeks to live as he waits for a small bowel and liver transplant, was one of three sick children to receive an early visit from Santa, arranged by fundraising legend John O’Byrne.
Zachary’s mother, Jade, expressed how special the visit from Santa was for the family, allowing them to create cherished memories during a time of uncertainty about Zachary’s future and the upcoming Christmas celebration. Despite being unwell and only permitted a short visit at home, Zachary and his family were grateful for the opportunity.
Zachary had previously received a new liver in 2023, but unfortunately, he contracted sepsis which damaged the donor organ. Now, he urgently needs a matching donor, facing the risk of infections that could be fatal at any time. The family remains hopeful for a suitable donor, although they are aware of the challenges due to Zachary’s size and the limited number of donors available.
Santa also visited two other children, David Goring and Ollie Gibson, who are facing their own health battles. David, born prematurely at 24 weeks with profound disabilities, enjoys communication through signing with his family. Meanwhile, Ollie, born with rare health issues such as epilepsy, spent five years in the hospital before finally being able to celebrate Christmas at home with his family.
John O’Byrne, known for his dedication to creating joyful experiences for sick children, arranged the special visits, bringing light and happiness to the young recipients. Despite facing personal challenges, including an injury earlier in the year, John made sure to spread Christmas cheer to the children in need.
