South Lanarkshire Council is set to crack down on pavement parking violations across the region starting in 2025. From January 6 next year, offenders could face fines for pavement parking as well as double parking and obstructing dropped kerbs. The move is aimed at enhancing safety and accessibility for pedestrians on footpaths and roads.
Chair of the council’s Community and Enterprise Resources Committee, Councillor Robert Brown, highlighted the need for a balanced approach to address the issue. Brown stated that while parking spaces may be limited in certain areas, the safety of pedestrians, especially those with mobility challenges, must take priority. This initiative aims to create a safer environment for wheelchair users, people with visual impairments, parents with prams, and other pedestrians.
The council plans to implement formal enforcement measures to ensure compliance with parking regulations. Initially, warning signs were placed on vehicles to inform drivers of the upcoming introduction of fines. However, starting from January 5, stricter enforcement will begin, particularly at busy locations where pavement obstruction is common.
The revenue generated from penalties will be directed towards the operational expenses of the parking unit within the council. This move comes amidst increasing funding pressures faced by various council services. The council emphasised that the enforcement of parking laws is intended to improve pedestrian safety on pavements.
While a lenient enforcement approach was initially adopted, drivers should now expect to receive Fixed Penalty Notices for pavement parking violations. The council plans to assess each case individually to determine the appropriate course of action in addressing parking infractions effectively.
