Seven tourists rushed to hospital after drinking cocktails at luxury holiday resort

Seven holidaymakers were rushed to the hospital in Fiji after drinking cocktails at a luxury resort bar. The group, consisting of Australians and an American, were all on drips in the hospital due to experiencing symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and headaches, as reported by The Mirror. The guests were staying at the prestigious five-star Warwick resort near Sigatoka when they fell ill on Saturday, according to Jemesa Tudravu, a spokesperson for the Fiji Health Ministry.

Local media indicated that the symptoms were due to alcohol poisoning. This incident follows the tragic deaths of six tourists, including Brit Simone White, in Laos in November after consuming drinks. Police have ordered toxicology tests and are awaiting results. Mr. Tudravu mentioned that the tourists are in stable condition at Lautoka Hospital, and there have been no other reports of similar illnesses at the resort or elsewhere in Fiji.

David Sandoe’s daughter and granddaughter from Australia are among those hospitalized. The Warwick resort, located on the Coral Coast of Vitu Levu, is known for its reputable operations and is fully cooperating with the investigation, said Fijian authorities. While the government refrained from speculating on the cause of the illness, it updated its travel advisory website with warnings of potential risks such as drink spiking and methanol poisoning.

Savaira Molaucake, a spokesperson for the Warwick resort, stated that a thorough investigation into the incident is ongoing, with close coordination with relevant authorities. The resort has a robust reputation, according to Fijian authorities. The situation serves as a grim reminder of recent incidents in Asia and highlights the importance of ensuring the safety of tourists at hospitality establishments.

In conclusion, incidents like these serve as a stark reminder of the potential risks involved when consuming alcoholic drinks in unfamiliar settings. It is essential for travellers to be cautious and vigilant, especially when indulging in cocktails or beverages with unknown ingredients. The swift response from authorities and the resort staff is crucial in addressing such emergencies and ensuring the well-being of all guests. Travelers are urged to stay informed and follow safety guidelines to avoid similar incidents while enjoying their vacations.
