Stevenson’s reliance on EncroChat, believed to be uncrackable, backfired when the system was breached by law enforcement, exposing his identity as the head of a major crime empire.
The 59-year-old gangland kingpin, known for his meticulous planning and delegation of criminal activities, made a fatal error in trusting EncroChat’s encryption. By sharing his driving licence to verify his identity with new contacts in the drug cartel, Stevenson inadvertently provided authorities with concrete proof of his leadership role within the criminal network.
Stevenson’s faith in EncroChat’s impenetrable security was shared by other high-profile criminals across Europe, leading to a major crackdown on organised crime. The platform’s encryption was compromised in June 2020, prompting a series of arrests and convictions, including Stevenson and several accomplices.
The National Crime Agency (NCA) utilised data from EncroChat through Operation Venetic to identify criminal activities, solve murders, and disrupt drug trafficking operations. Stevenson’s involvement in a large-scale cocaine smuggling operation, valued at £76 million, was uncovered through intercepted EncroChat messages.
Despite Stevenson’s reputation for evading law enforcement, his use of EncroChat handles like ‘elusiveale’ and ‘bigtasty’ eventually led to his arrest and subsequent conviction on drug charges. Alongside his associates, Stevenson admitted to directing criminal activities involving cocaine importation and illegal drug production.
Stevenson’s sentencing to 20 years in prison marked the conclusion of a high-profile case that exposed the vulnerabilities of relying on encrypted communication platforms for illicit activities.
