A Scottish gangster has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for his role as a ‘key link’ in the UK’s biggest ever drugs conspiracy. Sohail Qureshi, originally from Glasgow, was part of an organised crime group that smuggled billions of pounds worth of heroin, cocaine and cannabis into the country. The 64-year-old was convicted of plotting to import these illegal substances and was described as a crucial figure in facilitating the group’s operations. Qureshi, along with two other men, was jailed at Manchester Crown Court after a lengthy investigation by the National Crime Agency.
Qureshi’s involvement in the gang included working with criminals from the Netherlands to establish new smuggling routes into the UK. He collaborated closely with Khaleed Vazeer and Ghazanfar Mahmood, both from Greater Manchester, to carry out the illicit activities. Vazeer and Mahmood were also sentenced to years in prison for their roles in the organised crime group. The gang, led by Paul Green, utilized front companies and rented warehouses in both the UK and the Netherlands to transport drugs concealed within deliveries of aromatic food products.
The group’s criminal activities spanned over three years, during which they managed to smuggle at least 240 shipments of drugs into the country. In total, 12 members of the organised crime group have been sentenced to a collective 246 years in jail.
