Sara Sharif’s father and stepmother have been sentenced to life in prison for the torture and murder of 10-year-old Sara. The horrific abuse she suffered included beatings, burns, bites, and restraints at her family home in Woking, Surrey. Urfan Sharif, 42, and Beinash Batool, 30, attempted to conceal the abuse by withdrawing Sara from school and later fleeing to Pakistan after her death. At their sentencing, Sharif received a minimum term of 40 years, Batool was given 33 years, and Sara’s uncle, Faisal Malik, 29, received a 16-year sentence for causing or allowing her death.
During the trial at the Old Bailey, Mr. Justice Cavanagh described Sara’s death as the result of years of neglect, assaults, and torture, primarily at the hands of Sharif. He condemned the couple’s actions and highlighted the dangers of vulnerable children being homeschooled. Sara’s mother, Olga Sharif, remembered her daughter as a joyful child and spoke out against the perpetrators in a victim impact statement, calling them “sadists” and “executioners.”
The court heard details of the extreme physical abuse Sara endured, including 71 fresh injuries, broken bones, burns, and human bites. Despite the distressing evidence presented, Sharif initially denied responsibility before admitting guilt, causing shock among jurors. The case raised concerns about child protection and the importance of early intervention to prevent tragedies like Sara’s death.
Efforts are ongoing to bring Sara’s siblings and half-siblings back to the UK from Pakistan, where they currently reside with their paternal grandfather. The sentencing of Sara’s father, stepmother, and uncle serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of child abuse and the urgent need for vigilance and protection of vulnerable children in our society.
