A 10-year-old girl, Sara Sharif, suffered a horrific campaign of torture and abuse behind closed doors in her family home, ultimately leading to her tragic death. Sara’s father, Urfan Sharif, her stepmother Beinash Batool, and her uncle Faisal Malik have all been sentenced at the Old Bailey in relation to her torture. Sharif and Batool, who were found guilty of the little girl’s murder, have both received life sentences. Sharif will serve a minimum of 40 years in prison before being eligible for parole, while Batool will serve a minimum of 33 years. Malik, convicted of causing or allowing Sara’s death, has been sentenced to at least 16 years.
The sentencing judge, Mr Justice Cavanagh, highlighted that Sara was treated as “worthless” by her family members and that she was singled out for abuse among her siblings because she was a girl and not Batool’s biological child. The court heard disturbing details of the abuse Sara endured, including being hooded, bitten, burned with an iron, and beaten so severely that she suffered 25 broken bones over a two-year period. The family’s abuse of Sara was uncovered when police found her lifeless body on August 10, 2023, after her father made a distressed call confessing to her death.
Doctors who examined Sara’s body found evidence of extensive injuries, including fractures to her spine, collarbone, ribs, shoulder blades, arms, and hands. Sara also had bite marks on her arm and thigh and burn marks from an iron. Profoundly, Sara’s injuries were so severe that medical experts likened them to being “kicked by a horse.” The court heard that Sara had been strangled and suffered multiple episodes of blunt force trauma over several weeks leading up to her death.
Despite attempts to conceal the abuse by withdrawing Sara from school, the family’s heinous actions were eventually uncovered.
