Family of British Grandmother Struggling for Life After Contracting Covid in the US Updates on Her Condition

The family of Patricia Bunting, a 76-year-old grandmother from Wigan, who is fighting for her life after falling ill with Covid-19 during a trip to Florida, has provided an update on her condition. Patricia had embarked on a three-week holiday to Florida with her grandson and two sons when she fell ill without travel insurance.

Currently receiving treatment at Orlando’s Dr. P. Phillips Hospital, Patricia’s health challenges have intensified. She is battling a second bout of bacterial pneumonia, undergoing treatment with IV antibiotics, recovering from a gastrointestinal bleed, and managing blood clots in her legs. Patricia continues to require continuous oxygen support as her oxygen levels fluctuate between 80-90 per cent.

The family is facing a daunting £80,000 cost to repatriate Patricia back to the UK, an increase from the initial £50,000 sought. Despite exploring various medical assisted flight options, the lowest quote received remains around £80,000. Patricia, a Disneyland enthusiast who refers to the theme park as her “happy place,” had opted out of travel insurance due to the steep £3,000 cost attributed to her underlying health conditions.

As her health prevents her from flying as a regular passenger, Patricia would necessitate medical assistance during the journey home. Her family is striving to bring her back to the UK for treatment closer to home. The GoFundMe campaign set up to raise funds for her repatriation has garnered approximately £29,330 as of the latest update.

Emma, Patricia’s daughter, expressed hope that a repatriation plan could be arranged as early as the following week. She acknowledged the outpouring of support for her mother, expressing gratitude for the comfort and hope it had provided the family.

In an emotional recount, Emma revealed that Patricia was discovered slumped over the bathtub in their hotel room after complaining of extreme fatigue. Prompt action was taken as Patricia was swiftly transported to the hospital for urgent medical attention, further underscoring the severity of her condition.

The family remains optimistic about Patricia’s recovery and is deeply appreciative of the generosity and concern demonstrated by well-wishers during this challenging time.

This update serves as a testament to the resilience and unity displayed by families in times of crisis, highlighting the strength derived from community support and empathy towards those in need. The unwavering determination to overcome obstacles and provide the best possible care for a loved one showcases the power of compassion and solidarity in the face of adversity.
