New research from the University of St Andrews has shed light on the impact of air pollution on the health of Scots residing in polluted areas. The study revealed that individuals living in regions with poor air quality are at an increased risk of hospital admissions for both mental health issues and physical illnesses. Previous studies have primarily focused on mortality rates related to air pollution and its effects on physical health. However, this recent analysis delved into the correlation between exposure to air pollution and hospital admissions.

The research analysed data from 202,237 adults gathered between 2002 and 2017, examining the levels of four key air pollutants – nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulphur dioxide (SO2), particulate matter with a diameter of at least 10 microns (PM10), and fine particulate matter of 2.5 microns or less (PM2.5). The study tracked hospital admissions for various conditions including cardiovascular, respiratory, infectious diseases, mental illness, and behavioural disorders. The findings highlighted a significant association between cumulative exposure to air pollution and increased rates of hospitalisations.

Notably, higher exposure to NO2, PM10, and PM2.5 was linked to elevated rates of hospital admissions across all causes. Sulphur dioxide was predominantly associated with admissions for respiratory diseases, whereas nitrogen dioxide exhibited a stronger correlation with hospitalisations for mental health and behavioural disorders. Dr Mary Abed Al Ahad, who led the research, emphasised the need for stricter environmental regulations to alleviate the burden on healthcare facilities in the long term. She suggested interventions such as zero-emission zones and incentives for renewable energy as potential solutions to mitigate the adverse effects of air pollution.

The study utilised individual-level data from the Scottish Longitudinal Study, representing 5% of the Scottish population and spanning 16 years. Researchers assessed annual exposure to ambient air pollution, taking residential postcodes into account for personal exposure calculations. The study’s publication in the open-access journal BMJ Open underscores the urgency of addressing air pollution to safeguard the mental and physical well-being of individuals in Scotland.
