A young father, Liam Handley, tragically passed away at the age of 37 after being repeatedly told by medical professionals that his severe chest pains were a result of anxiety. Liam, who had a history of anxiety, sought help from his GP when the chest pains persisted. Despite his continued visits to the doctor, his symptoms were dismissed as stress, and his medication was increased without any improvement in his condition. Eventually, after months of suffering, Liam received a terminal diagnosis of lung cancer. His devastated family shared that the cancer had already spread to his liver, spine, and lymph nodes.
Liam’s family expressed frustration that he was never referred for a chest x-ray despite the escalating severity of his symptoms. Following a hospital visit for blood clots in his lungs, which was treated with blood thinners, a delayed CT scan and subsequent private CT scan finally revealed the extent of Liam’s illness. He was diagnosed with metastatic lung adenocarcinoma, a genetically mutated form of lung cancer that typically affects non-smokers.
Despite undergoing radiotherapy and targeted therapy treatment, Liam’s condition deteriorated, and the cancer eventually became resistant to treatment. He underwent chemotherapy and immunotherapy, but sadly, his health continued to decline, and he passed away in October 2021. Liam’s family described him as a devoted father to his four children, highlighting his selflessness and love for his family.
In response to Liam’s story and similar cases, the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation has launched the “Let Go of the Labels” campaign to raise awareness about lung cancer and challenge stereotypes associated with the disease. The campaign aims to eliminate labels like smoker and non-smoker in relation to lung cancer, emphasizing that anyone can be affected by the disease, regardless of their smoking history.
Liam’s family is actively supporting the campaign in his memory, advocating for greater awareness and early detection of lung cancer. The foundation’s chief executive highlighted the importance of removing stigmas and labels to ensure prompt diagnosis and treatment for all individuals at risk of lung cancer.
As the family continues to mourn the loss of Liam, they hope that sharing his story will help prevent similar misdiagnoses and delays in treatment for others facing similar health challenges. Awareness and education are key in the fight against lung cancer, and initiatives like the “Let Go of the Labels” campaign play a crucial role in promoting early detection and support for individuals and families affected by the disease.
