Scottish Power is set to create 1,400 new jobs and invest nearly £11 billion in the power grid as part of its commitment to clean energy. The energy giant, along with SSE based in Perth, is part of a group of companies pledging a total of £70 billion over the next five years to upgrade the UK’s energy system for the renewable energy revolution.
As part of its new business plan for 2026-2031, Scottish Power plans to double its transmission workforce with the creation of 1,400 new jobs, in addition to supporting 11,000 more jobs across the UK. The investment of £10.6 billion in central and southern Scotland will focus on increasing capacity, with projects including the construction of 12 new major transmission substations, upgrading 280 miles of existing circuits, and installing 60 miles of upgraded overhead lines and 22 miles of underground cables.
Independent research conducted by the University of Strathclyde has shown that this business plan could potentially boost the UK economy by £2 billion per year. Meanwhile, SSE is also making significant investments, with a total of £22 billion allocated for various initiatives, including speeding up the connection of offshore wind farms to the grid.
The ultimate goal of these investments by Scottish Power, SSE, and National Grid is to decarbonize the energy system by 2030. The companies are jointly investing £70 billion over the next five years to achieve this objective. However, these proposals are subject to approval by the regulator Ofgem, which will need to balance the spending plans with the need to protect customers from rising energy costs.
Nicola Connelly, CEO of SP Energy Networks, expressed the importance of making these crucial investments to create a cleaner and greener future, which could ultimately lead to stabilizing and lowering consumer energy bills in the long term. Rob McDonald from SSEN Transmission also highlighted the positive impact of their investment plans in supporting jobs and boosting the economy across the country.
In conclusion, the commitment by Scottish Power and SSE to invest in clean energy infrastructure is a significant step towards achieving a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy system in the UK. It not only creates jobs and boosts the economy but also contributes to the country’s transition to a greener future.
