A man who confronted an 80-year-old woman in her own home and demanded money has been sentenced to 18 months in jail. The incident took place in Carfin Street, where Connor McLean, 24, assaulted the elderly woman before being overpowered by her son who came to her rescue. McLean, who admitted to the assault, also assaulted another woman in the same street on the same day.
The first incident occurred around 5:30 pm, when McLean entered the woman’s kitchen through an unlocked back door. He demanded money and after the woman tried to remove him, he continued to push her until her son intervened. Shortly after, McLean entered another home through an unlocked door and grabbed a woman’s wrist before her husband restrained him until the police arrived. Fortunately, neither woman sustained injuries from the incidents.
McLean’s lawyer stated that he had been abusing alcohol and had no recollection of the events. However, it was revealed during court proceedings that McLean was assessed as being at a “very high risk” of serious offending and causing harm to others. As part of his sentence, Sheriff John Hamilton ordered McLean to be supervised for 18 months upon his release from prison.
