The incident took place at the Ivy in the Park nursery in Carntyne, where intruders had forcibly entered the premises and made off with an iPad. Determined to provide closure to the young children affected by the break-in, caretaker Paul McGrath, with the support of community police officers, devised a plan to involve the children in a unique and festive way.
On December 19, the children were informed that the Grinch had paid a visit to their nursery, which immediately sparked their interest upon noticing the boarded-up glass door. To create a memorable experience for the children, Paul dressed up as the infamous Dr. Seuss character, and in a staged event, was “arrested” by local police in the presence of the children who were also dressed as miniature police officers. The Grinch was then led into a police van, and the children were able to retrieve a bag filled with chocolates, kindly donated by local officers.
Annefrances McGrath, the Operations Director at Ivy in the Park and Paul’s spouse, expressed delight at the children’s enthusiastic involvement in the event, noting the importance of ensuring that the nursery remains a safe and secure space for them. The aim was to empower the children and provide them with a sense of closure before the Christmas break, helping them feel reassured that they had played a key role in apprehending the Grinch.
In the aftermath of the break-in, the nursery staff worked diligently to clean up the premises, with the assistance of joiners and glaziers who ensured that the nursery could reopen promptly for the children. Although temporary measures were taken such as boarding up the damaged door, special provisions were made to address the safety and security concerns at the nursery.
