Wishaw MSP Urges Vigilance Against Fake Goods While Online Shopping This Christmas
Multiple investigations conducted by the charity Electrical Safety First have revealed the presence of fake, substandard, and dangerous electrical goods on various online marketplaces like Amazon, eBay, and Wish. Wishaw MSP Clare Adamson is calling on individuals to remain vigilant, especially during their online Christmas shopping. In Scotland, electrical products are the primary cause of domestic fires, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the quality and safety of such items.
Research by Electrical Safety First has indicated that approximately 40% of Scots believe it is safe to shop on any online marketplace. However, a survey by the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) found that nearly three-quarters of parents incorrectly assume that products targeting children under five undergo thorough safety testing before being sold online. Ms. Adamson, who serves as the Scottish Parliament’s Cross Party Group on Accident Prevention and Safety Awareness convenor, highlighted these concerns during a parliamentary session.
Ms. Adamson emphasised the need to only patronise reputable sellers and to exercise caution when purchasing electrical goods or toys online, as online shopping lacks the same consumer protections as traditional retail. She warned against the prevalence of substandard and counterfeit products on major online platforms and stressed the significance of prioritising product safety, particularly regarding electrical items and toys with button batteries intended for children.
The MSP encouraged the public to make use of free resources and guidance provided by organisations like CAPT, RoSPA, and Electrical Safety First to educate themselves about common hazards, such as button batteries, and stay informed about unsafe product recalls.
