Dog Owner Issues Christmas Warning After Labrador Ingests Chocolate
A dog owner from Aberdeen is cautioning pet owners to keep chocolate out of reach from their furry friends this festive season following a terrifying incident involving her family’s Labrador last year. Louise Ritchie shared her story after her four-year-old pet, Harvey, managed to consume nearly two whole boxes of Christmas chocolates. Louise explained that her daughter had received the chocolates as a gift but had not yet eaten them. Despite Harvey usually not being allowed upstairs, he sneaked into a forbidden room and devoured almost the entire stash, leaving behind just one lone chocolate as evidence. The family only discovered what had happened when they found wrappers scattered all over the bedroom floor. Unsure of how much chocolate Harvey had consumed or when, Louise rushed him to the emergency vets immediately.
Aware of the toxicity of chocolate to dogs, the vets put Harvey on a drip and he had to stay overnight due to the risk of kidney damage. The next day, Louise brought him home, but Harvey was feeling under the weather for a few days. Fortunately, Harvey made a full recovery thanks to Louise’s prompt action. The emergency care for Harvey cost over £1,000. According to recent statistics from The Kennel Club, incidents of chocolate poisoning in dogs increase during the festive season, with nearly a third of claims for chocolate poisoning occurring in December 2023 and January 2024. January saw the highest number of claims, more than doubling the monthly average with a 106% increase.
