Dad-of-two dies after fatal norovirus outbreak on board cruise ship

**Dad-of-two tragically passes away following fatal norovirus outbreak while on a cruise ship**

A father of two tragically passed away after falling seriously ill due to contracting norovirus while on a cruise in October. Alan Forster, from Paignton, Devon, became unwell two weeks into a dream voyage from Southampton to New York with his wife, Dianna. The retired teacher, who was also a grandfather to four grandchildren, experienced symptoms such as diarrhoea, stomach cramps, and vomiting, leading to suspected kidney failure and his eventual passing. Despite Dianna raising concerns about Alan’s symptoms early on, she expressed receiving no assistance until she insisted that Alan be transferred to the ship’s medical facility.

The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed an outbreak of norovirus on the P&O Arcadia Cruise, with nearly 100 other passengers reporting symptoms and many being quarantined in their cabins. Alan and Dianna had been married for 54 years and had previously enjoyed 47 cruises together. Dianna shared her devastation, expressing how she and Alan had been looking forward to more years together, and she struggles to accept his sudden loss. She blamed herself for the decision to go on the cruise, feeling immense grief and pain since his passing.

Dianna revealed the challenges she faced in getting Alan the medical attention he required, recounting how nurses initially did not take his deteriorating condition seriously. Despite multiple attempts to seek help, she was met with resistance until Alan’s symptoms became critical. Alan was eventually transferred to a hospital in Saint John, Canada, where he eventually passed away. Their two sons, John and Iain, have now engaged lawyers to investigate the circumstances leading to Alan’s death and seek justice.

Jatinder Paul, an expert international serious injury lawyer, highlighted the concerns surrounding the outbreak on the cruise ship and the swift decline in Alan’s health. Investigations are underway to understand the failings that may have occurred on board, including delays in providing medical assistance to Alan. Dianna emphasized the need for answers to prevent such a tragic incident from happening to others.

P&O Cruises acknowledged receiving a legal claim regarding Mr Forster’s death and stated they would conduct a thorough investigation before responding accordingly. The family seeks closure and hopes for transparency to prevent similar incidents in the future.

**Insights and Summary:**
The tragic incident involving Alan Forster highlights the importance of prompt and effective medical assistance onboard cruise ships, especially during a norovirus outbreak. Dianna’s harrowing experience sheds light on the challenges faced by passengers in accessing timely medical care and the need for improved protocols to handle such emergencies. The legal actions taken by the family underscore the significance of accountability and transparency in ensuring passenger safety and well-being. Cruise companies must prioritise passenger health and safety to prevent future tragedies like the one experienced by the Forster family.
