Six-year-old Evie Thompson from Motherwell has exemplified the true spirit of Christmas by collecting hundreds of food items for those in need. The P2 pupil at Knowetop Primary aimed to gather 100 items for the Motherwell Food Bank at the Maranatha Centre within three weeks. Surpassing her initial target, Evie generously donated over 350 items to Andrew Ewart at the centre, operated by Clyde Valley Community Church on Glencairn Street.
Evie’s inspiration to help others came from a conversation with her mum, Emma Thompson, about children who may not experience a joyful Christmas. Emma shared how Evie expressed her desire to sell some of her toys to assist those in need. Witnessing people queuing at a food bank, Evie decided to collect items for donation. She took proactive steps by creating a poster and mobilising her classmates and the school community to contribute.
Emma praised Evie’s kindness, describing her as a caring individual who took the initiative to make a difference. Evie’s altruistic efforts have significantly boosted the food bank donations, with the weekly average increasing from two trolleys to six, thanks to the generosity of individuals like Evie.
Andrew Ewart, delighted by Evie’s donation, expressed gratitude for her selfless act. He highlighted the surge in demand at the food bank, distributing food parcels to more individuals and families this year. Despite the challenges, the community’s support, especially from young individuals like Evie, has made a significant impact.
