A father from Scotland who has been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is urging the government to provide more funding for research into the condition. Mark Sommerville, a 43-year-old from Uddingston in Lanarkshire, recently received support from Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who stated, “We stand with you in this fight.” Sommerville stressed the urgent need for increased government assistance in finding a cure for MND, a disease with limited treatment options and a devastating impact on those diagnosed.
Following his diagnosis in October last year and being given only 18 months to live, Sommerville has taken it upon himself to establish the Mark Sommerville Foundation to raise funds for research efforts. Labour MP Frank McNally also brought attention to Sommerville’s case in the House of Commons, advocating for enhanced government funding to combat MND. In response, Starmer acknowledged Sommerville’s advocacy work and commended the efforts of rugby league star Kevin Sinfield, who has raised substantial funds for MND research.
During discussions with Members of Parliament, Sommerville and advocates from his foundation emphasised the importance of raising awareness, securing funding, and advancing research into MND. MND Scotland has been actively funding research initiatives for four decades, including the MND-SMART clinical trial launched in 2018. This trial, based at the University of Edinburgh, offers individuals across the UK the opportunity to participate in clinical research aimed at advancing MND treatment options. Collaboration with the Scottish Government on various research projects underscores the commitment to accelerating progress in MND research.
