Paisley Thug Sentenced to 18 Months for Using Knife to Intimidate Former Friend
A Paisley man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for wielding a knife at a former friend in an attempt to scare him away. Ryan Luby, with three prior assault convictions, brandished a kitchen knife on August 24 to intimidate his former pal into leaving his property. The altercation took place on Kilnside Road, where Luby pointed the knife at the victim and aggressively shouted and swore. Two witnesses observed the incident, with one filming it and alerting the police. Fortunately, the situation de-escalated when Luby retreated back into his home, and the victim left the scene unharmed.
During his appearance at Paisley Sheriff Court, it was revealed that Luby and the victim had a history of disputes, leading Luby to take the drastic step of arming himself with a knife. His defence agent, Ruth Wallace, explained that Luby’s intention was not to use the knife but to protect his mother, who he cares for and who recently suffered a stroke. Recognising the seriousness of his actions, Luby acknowledged that bringing out the knife could have had severe consequences.
Sheriff Colin Pettigrew expressed concern over Luby’s extensive criminal record, highlighting three previous assault convictions. Given his past offences and the potential danger of the situation, the only suitable punishment was deemed to be a custodial sentence. Luby, currently detained at Low Moss jail in Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire, was sentenced to 18 months, with the term backdated to his remand on August 26.
