Community groups in Dumfries and Galloway have received a much-needed financial boost through the Community Led Local Development Fund. A total of 103 organizations applied for funding, amounting to just under £2.2 million, while the available fund was £407,015. The selection process was meticulous, with a local action group comprising representatives from the third, public, and private sectors, along with support from Third Sector Dumfries and Galloway, choosing 34 deserving groups to support.
Harry Harbottle, chairman of the LAG, expressed gratitude for being able to provide grants to these organizations but acknowledged the challenges of oversubscription. He highlighted the importance of continuing the fund at a higher level to meet the pressing needs across the region. Many of the recipient groups are volunteer-run and play a crucial role in supporting vulnerable individuals affected by economic hardships.
Various projects have been awarded funding, including initiatives supporting older people, community food networks, employability projects, and community events. The grants ranged from a few thousand pounds to tens of thousands, demonstrating the significant impact even modest funding can have on community initiatives.
The fund prioritized projects addressing the cost of living crisis, poverty eradication, rural community development, and environmental sustainability. Organizations like Home-Start Wigtownshire, Rokpa Trust Lothlorien Community, and The Stove Network are among those receiving grants to support their valuable work in the community.
With the financial support received, these community groups can continue their vital services, ranging from providing hot meals to the elderly, promoting local food networks, offering cooking sessions, and enhancing community spaces. The funding not only addresses immediate needs but also contributes to long-term sustainability and growth in the region.
