Popular postbox introduced at Dumfries crematorium
A special ‘letters to a loved one’ postbox has been unveiled at the Roucan Loch Crematorium in Collin near Dumfries, much to the delight of the local community in Dumfries and Galloway. The postbox, a brainchild of crematorium manager Ruth Jardine, aims to offer comfort to those grieving the loss of their loved ones, especially during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Originally introduced as a response to the challenges posed by the pandemic, the initiative received overwhelming support, leading to the decision to make the postbox a permanent feature at Roucan Loch.
Ruth Jardine expressed her hopes for the postbox to serve as a personal and private way for the bereaved to connect with their departed loved ones by writing letters, cards, and messages to be ‘posted’ in the box. Every letter deposited in the postbox will be handled with the utmost respect and confidentiality, never to be opened or read, and eventually interred in The Forest of Remembrance on the crematorium grounds.
As the Christmas season can be a particularly challenging time for those grieving, the postbox has been especially popular during this period. Ruth Jardine emphasised the significance of reflecting on cherished memories and expressing feelings through writing, as a means to find solace amidst the pain of loss.
In addition to the introduction of the postbox, the Roucan Loch Crematorium recently hosted a free annual Christmas Memorial Service on December 19. The service aimed to provide a supportive space for individuals coping with the loss of a loved one, offering music, poetry, and moments of reflection.
Meanwhile, Jardine Funeral Directors, a long-established family-run business in Dumfries, was honoured at the Scottish Funeral Awards. The company was recognised as the best funeral director in the south of Scotland for the fourth consecutive year, with additional accolades for Best Undertaker in Scotland and Best Crematorium in Scotland. The family behind Jardine Funeral Directors, spanning six generations, expressed gratitude for the community’s trust and support over the years.
The positive feedback and recognition received by the funeral director and crematorium underscore the valuable role they play in providing compassionate and dignified services to those in need. The ongoing commitment to excellence at Roucan Loch Crematorium was also highlighted in a glowing report following an annual inspection.
