A Blantyre couple recently celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary in style, adding a touch of sparkle to the festive season. Elizabeth and Charles Findlay, known as Betty and Charlie, commemorated their remarkable 60 years of marriage on December 28. Interestingly, this special date is not only significant to them but also to their son Ian and daughter-in-law Carol, who also tied the knot on the same day and were celebrating their 28th anniversary. The couple, who are proud Blantyre natives, first met at a local miners’ welfare dance when they were 17 and 22, respectively. After courting for a few years, they exchanged vows at Livingstone Memorial Church in Blantyre in 1964.
Having spent the initial years of their marriage in Rutherglen, the Findlays returned to Blantyre, where they have resided ever since. They raised three sons, Ian, Paul, and Graeme, and are now doting grandparents to three grandchildren. Despite facing the loss of their son Paul three years ago, the couple remains steadfast in their love and commitment to one another. Charlie worked as a time-served plater at the electricity board and Ravenscraig, retiring over 30 years ago when the steelworks closed down. Betty, on the other hand, spent her final 30 working years as a credit controller.
The Findlays have a passion for travel and have enjoyed various trips, including visits to Australia and an annual cruise. They fondly recall a memorable trip to Sorrento, Italy, where they witnessed a breathtaking sunrise and even heard a road sweeper sing the famous Neapolitan classic “O Sole Mio.” Surrounded by family, the couple celebrated their diamond anniversary over the holiday season, receiving flowers and a certificate from South Lanarkshire depute provost Bert Thomson and depute lord lieutenant Dr William Morrison Young. The icing on the cake was a special certificate from King Charles and Queen Camilla.
