Woman suddenly speaks with ‘perfect Geordie accent’ despite never visiting Newcastle

A woman from the Midlands, Verity Went, has left many in disbelief after waking up one day speaking with a Geordie accent despite never having visited Newcastle. Verity, aged 27, shared her story of waking up with a different accent, a change that occurred following severe migraines and the diagnosis of two rare conditions. She described feeling “absolutely terrified” at the sudden transformation in her speech.

Verity explained that alongside the accent change, she experienced debilitating migraines that led to blackouts, vomiting, seizures, and partial paralysis, leaving her struggling to cope. A diagnosis in 2022 revealed she had functional neurologic disorder (FND) and foreign accent syndrome, conditions that can cause unexplained symptoms related to the nervous system and alter speech patterns.

Despite facing scepticism and accusations of dishonesty, Verity bravely shared her story on social media platforms like TikTok, where she detailed her condition and the challenges she faces due to the sudden accent shift. Her openness has garnered significant attention and support online, with many expressing disbelief and showing empathy towards her situation.

In her interviews and videos, Verity highlighted the impact of her conditions on her daily life, from struggles with confidence to the inability to function independently. She also addressed the misconceptions and hurtful comments she has received, including being labelled a “liar” by online trolls seeking attention.

Verity’s journey of coming to terms with her new reality involves not only adapting to her changed speech but also managing symptoms like fatigue, frequent seizures, and memory loss. With the help of a brain surgeon, she is undergoing treatment to better understand her conditions and receive necessary support.

Despite the challenges she faces, Verity’s resilience and determination shine through as she navigates this unexpected and life-altering experience. Her story serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities of neurological conditions and the importance of empathy and understanding in supporting those who are affected.
