MSP calls for more Perthshire EV charging points
A Perthshire MSP has urged for the installation of more electric vehicle (EV) charging points in the region. Murdo Fraser, a Conservative Mid Scotland and Fife MSP, highlighted the need for additional funding to enhance the deployment of EV chargers. According to recent environmental information (EIR) requested by Mr. Fraser, as of November 4, there were 91 functional charging locations in Perth and Kinross.
Fraser emphasised the importance of expanding the EV charging infrastructure to accommodate the increasing number of electric cars on the roads. He pointed out previous issues in Perth where several EV charging points were out of service, underscoring the necessity for reliable and accessible charging facilities. With the growing popularity of electric vehicles among both residents and tourists in Perthshire, Fraser stressed the significance of ensuring a sufficient network of charging points, including in rural areas.
While acknowledging that the Scottish Government does not operate public EV charge points directly, Fraser noted their role in providing funding to local authorities. Each of Scotland’s 32 Councils received £140,000 to facilitate the development of public EV charging points. Fraser highlighted the range limitations of electric cars, estimating that drivers can travel between 150 to 300 miles before requiring a recharge.
Expressing concern over the current availability of EV charging points in Mid Scotland and Fife, Fraser called for increased funding from the Scottish Government to meet the demands of the 21st century. A spokesperson from Transport Scotland referred to a Draft Implementation Plan outlining Scotland’s efforts to support the establishment of approximately 24,000 additional public EV charge points by 2030. The Scottish Government has already invested over £65 million since 2011 to support the rollout of public EV charging infrastructure, resulting in over 6000 public charging points across Scotland.
