Scotland is preparing for heavy snowfall on New Year’s Day as the Met Office has issued a new weather warning. The yellow alert for New Year’s Day could cause disruptions for many homes, especially those in rural areas. Several yellow weather warnings are in effect in different parts of the country in the upcoming days.
On Monday and Tuesday, a mix of heavy rain and snow is expected to impact Scotland from the Central Belt northwards. Perthshire and the North East are likely to experience snowfall, with the potential for blizzard-like conditions due to strong winds before transitioning to rain. Exposed locations in Southern and Central Scotland could face gusts of up to 70mph on Hogmanay.
The forecasters have now confirmed a new snow warning for January 1. The alert starts at 9 am on New Year’s Day and continues until 3 am on Thursday, January 2. The warning covers most of Southern Scotland, including the Borders, Dumfries and Galloway, Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire, Glasgow, the Lothians, Falkirk, and parts of Stirlingshire. Moving northwards, Perth, Dundee, Perthshire, Fife, and Angus are also included, with the warning area extending as far north as Brechin.
Significant and continuous snowfall is anticipated in the affected regions as a band of rain from a deep low-pressure system moves in from the west to the east. Approximately 2-5cm of snow is forecast widely, with some areas expecting up to 10cm. Travel delays on roads and rails are expected, and rural communities may be at risk of isolation. Additionally, power cuts are possible due to widespread snowfall.
Tony Wisson, Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster, mentioned that accumulations of 10-15cm of snowfall could occur locally, especially in higher elevations, leading to drifting snow in certain areas. Chief Forecaster Andy Page highlighted the complex weather forecast across the UK, including snow, strong winds, and heavy rain, urging the public to stay updated with the latest forecasts given the diverse and evolving weather conditions.
