A cleaning expert has shared a simple hack that will help to remove red wine stains from your carpet in minutes, and all you need is a 35p ingredient to pull it off. The festive season often brings merry mishaps, with spilt drinks and crumbs becoming a common occurrence. But fear not if you find yourself dealing with wine-soaked carpets, as a cleaning expert has revealed a quick method to banish those stubborn wine stains using a simple household item.
The tip was shared on TikTok by user jeeves_ny, who demonstrated the effectiveness of the technique by allowing red wine to seep into a white carpet overnight. He then tackled the stain the next day with a mixture of white vinegar and water, in a ratio of one to three. To complete the process, he recommended using a hot iron and several towels. The method is straightforward and effective.
To begin, pour the vinegar and water mixture over the stain and place a towel on top. Iron the towel until you see the colour transferring, as the heat helps to draw the liquid up into the towel, away from the carpet. Persistence is key, with up to six towels possibly needed to completely remove the stain. While most of the stain was successfully removed, a touch of hydrogen peroxide, known as a “colour-safe” bleach, was used to tackle any remaining discolouration. The end result was a carpet that looked as good as new.

While some may be sceptical and suggest alternative methods to tackle wine stains, experts recognise the effectiveness of using vinegar to address stains, particularly on certain types like rust. Applying vinegar directly to the stain and ironing over it with a damp cloth can yield positive results, as vinegar’s acidity helps dissolve stains and the heat from the iron transfers the stain onto the towel.
