Larkhall Man Jailed for Setting Fire to Partner’s Garden Shed After Argument
A man from Larkhall has been sentenced to 19 months in prison for setting fire to his partner’s garden shed following an argument. James Muir, 40, admitted to wilful fireraising on Morgan Street in Larkhall on June 22 last year. The Hamilton Sheriff Court heard that Muir’s reckless actions could have endangered lives if the alarm had not been raised.
In addition to the fire incident, Muir also pleaded guilty to breaching bail conditions by contacting his partner and entering Morgan Street on September 1 this year. Firefighters who responded to the blaze suspected that petrol had been used as an accelerant in the fire.
During the court proceedings, Muir’s defence lawyer, Sandy Morrison, mentioned that the couple had known each other for many years. Despite the gravity of the situation, Muir’s partner expressed a willingness to assist him in addressing his issues and even visited him while he was in custody.
Sheriff Michael Higgins noted that Muir was already on a community payback order for domestic abuse at the time of the fire incident. The sheriff highlighted Muir’s history of violence, disorder, vandalism, and breach of court orders, deeming him at high risk of reoffending. Sheriff Higgins emphasised that Muir’s actions had the potential to cause serious harm to others and property, given the presence of a petrol-powered lawnmower in the shed.
Fortunately, no serious harm occurred, thanks to the prompt reporting of the fire and the efforts of the firefighters who extinguished it. As a result of Muir’s guilty plea, the sheriff reduced his jail sentence from 30 months to 19 months and backdated it to reflect his time in custody since September 2 this year.
