American family ‘devastated’ after spending £8,000 on Edinburgh Hogmanay visit as events cancelled

An American family from Georgia has been left devastated after spending £8,000 to travel 4,000 miles to Edinburgh for the Hogmanay festival, only to find that many events had been cancelled due to inclement weather. Amber Newton, 45, and her husband Richard had saved up for years to fund this special trip for their two sons, aged 13 and 16. With New Year’s being their favorite time of year, the couple had planned to make this a special family tradition every five years.

The family’s disappointment was palpable as they arrived in Edinburgh to find out that the Street Party and Torchlight Procession, which they had tickets for, were both cancelled. Despite the setbacks, the family is determined to make the most of their trip and are looking for alternative Scottish events to attend during their stay.

Amber expressed her devastation by stating, “We’re devastated. We’ve spent thousands of dollars. I was full of positivity yesterday, but today I’m overwhelmed and not very optimistic. It just sucks.” The family had made significant sacrifices to finance this trip, including not buying each other Christmas presents, closing their garden swimming pool for the summer, and even redirecting funds from their son’s 16th birthday car towards the trip.

Despite the cancelled events, the family is still hopeful to experience some traditional Scottish activities and make the most of their time in Edinburgh. Amber’s husband, Richard, had been particularly looking forward to the Torchlight Procession, wanting to immerse himself in the authentic Scottish experience.

As they navigate through this unforeseen turn of events, the Newton family remains positive and determined to create lasting memories during their Edinburgh visit, turning disappointment into an opportunity for new adventures.

In summary, the Newton family’s story reflects the resilience and optimism of travellers faced with challenges, showcasing the unwavering spirit of exploration and the capacity to find joy in unexpected situations. Their determination to make the most of their trip despite the setbacks serves as an inspiring reminder of the transformative power of travel and the ability to create meaningful experiences even in the face of disappointment.
