A disturbing incident marred Boxing Day celebrations outside a pub in Coatbridge as a reveller was knocked unconscious during a violent confrontation. The altercation involved 21-year-old Connor Breslin, who was witnessed kicking a man on the head amidst the chaos. Breslin, residing in Loch Road, Chapelhall, made an appearance at Airdrie Sheriff Court recently in connection to the incident.
The court heard that Breslin pleaded guilty to assaulting the victim, resulting in severe injury and permanent disfigurement outside Owen’s Bar on Main Street, Coatbridge, in the early hours of December 27, 2023. According to Flora McCamley, the prosecutor, the violence erupted after a group of patrons, including both Breslin and the victim, exited the pub around 1 am at closing time. An argument escalated, leading to a larger-scale disturbance where physical altercations ensued.
McCamley recounted the events, stating that as tensions flared, the victim ended up on the ground after being punched multiple times by Breslin. Subsequently, Breslin proceeded to kick the man’s head before being momentarily restrained by a female who then let him go back to the victim. The pub manager, observing the altercation on CCTV, rushed out to aid the unconscious victim, who was bleeding profusely from a forehead wound.
Though the victim regained consciousness shortly after the incident, he was taken to Monklands Hospital for treatment where his wound was stitched. Despite undergoing a thorough scan, no skull fractures were detected, and he was discharged following care in the accident and emergency department. Defence solicitor Paul Belardo highlighted that Breslin had remained on bail since being charged and emphasised his client’s unblemished record during this time.
Sheriff Derek Livingston postponed sentencing until February to allow for background reports and an electronic tagging assessment. While continuing bail, Livingston cautioned Breslin that the severity of the charge should not be underestimated, indicating that the outcome was yet to be determined.
In retrospect, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the unforeseen violence that can erupt during festivities, underscoring the importance of restraint and responsible behaviour in public settings to prevent harm to oneself and others. Such incidents also highlight the role of authorities in ensuring justice is served and maintaining public safety amid social gatherings and celebrations.
