A treasure trove of rare items has been uncovered at an Edinburgh charity shop, sparking excitement among eager shoppers. The annual January extravaganza at The Shelter Scotland charity shop in Stockbridge, Edinburgh, showcased a range of unique items up for grabs, including a collectable Barbie doll by fashion designer Bob Mackie and an antique edition of Wuthering Heights. The tradition of this event dates back 23 years, with donations collected throughout the previous year culminating in this special sale.
In the first 30 minutes after the doors opened on Friday morning, sales totalled £1,950, with a remarkable £13,900 raised by 2pm. Among the standout items was a collectable Barbie doll by Bob Mackie, priced at £100, adorned in an extravagant pink and black gown with a matching headpiece, described as being in pristine condition. Another highlight was a new edition of Wuthering Heights from 1858, just over a decade after the novel was originally published.
Bob Mackie, known for designing Marilyn Monroe’s iconic dress from 1962, collaborated with Mattel to release the first Bob Mackie Barbie in 1990, transforming the doll’s identity. The shop also offered vintage Chanel and Burberry pieces, as well as unique amber Bakelite jewellery, crystal glassware, and signed Sir David Attenborough books.
Shop manager Peter Jew expressed gratitude to all donors and customers for their contributions, emphasising that this event not only offers a chance to acquire special items but also supports Shelter Scotland’s mission against the housing emergency. Shelter Scotland director Alison Watson highlighted the importance of such events in helping combat homelessness, with more than 10,110 children in Scotland currently without a home.
