Shamed former SNP MP Patrick Grady has been appointed head of policy and communications at Scotland’s International Development Alliance (SIDA), a charity funded by the Scottish Government. Grady, who was involved in a sexual harassment scandal in 2016, where he made unwanted sexual advances towards a 19-year-old SNP staffer, has now taken on this leadership role at the charity. The ex-MP for Glasgow North was previously suspended from the SNP in 2022 but was readmitted before stepping down as an MP ahead of the 2024 general election.
SIDA is known for supporting organisations involved in international development, with most of its funding coming from the Scottish Government, alongside contributions from the UK Government and annual subscriptions from its members. In his new role, Grady will be responsible for engaging with members and external stakeholders, identifying opportunities for influence, and leading communication efforts with key audiences.
Despite Grady’s appointment by SIDA, his victim has expressed concerns about the charity’s commitment to safeguarding and accountability. The victim stated that hiring someone with a history of inappropriate behaviour towards teenage colleagues raises questions about SIDA’s leadership integrity and commitment to their stated values. Grady has previously apologised for his actions in Parliament and has expressed remorse for his behaviour.
While the Scottish Government has clarified that they have no role in the staffing appointments at SIDA, the controversy surrounding Grady’s appointment raises questions about the accountability and ethical considerations within charitable organisations.
