Drag Queen Lawrence Chaney ‘speaks like Lorraine Kelly’ so Vegas punters understand him

Drag Queen Lawrence Chaney has found a clever way to connect with Vegas audiences – by speaking in a manner similar to Scottish TV presenter Lorraine Kelly. Lawrence, who hails from Helensburgh and grew up in the Gorbals as Lawrence Maidment, now performs six shows a week at the prestigious Flamingo Casino Hotel in Las Vegas.

The RuPaul’s Drag Race winner, aged 28, has been warmly received by American audiences in the diverse city of Las Vegas. Concerned about his Scottish accent being understood by the locals, Lawrence decided to adopt a slower and more easily comprehensible tone inspired by Lorraine Kelly. He shared, “Americans just love the Scottish sense of humour.”

Performing in Vegas has not only allowed Lawrence to showcase his talents but has also led to memorable encounters with celebrities like Paula Abdul, Lizzo, Lady Gaga’s manager, and Shania Twain. Reflecting on the impact of winning RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2021, Lawrence expressed gratitude for the life-changing opportunity and is determined to make the most of his newfound fame.

Returning to the UK for DragCon UK 2025 and a national tour, Lawrence plans to explore personal themes in his show, “Memoirs Of My Shagpipes,” which delves into the unglamorous and humorous side of being a drag artist. Additionally, he will star in a new TV series, “Slaycation,” alongside other international Drag Race winners.

Lawrence’s journey from the streets of Glasgow to the stages of Las Vegas exemplifies his resilience and determination to succeed in the world of drag. His ability to entertain audiences with a mix of humour, talent, and authenticity has endeared him to fans worldwide.

As Lawrence continues to charm audiences and share his unique perspective as a drag artist, his story serves as an inspiration for aspiring performers looking to make their mark on the global stage. With his blend of wit, charisma, and flamboyance, Lawrence Chaney is carving out a legacy that transcends borders and celebrates the art of drag in all its glory.
